XenData’s
Advanced Edition manages a tape library and RAID System on
a Windows file server to create a high performance data storage
solution. The software represents the tape library and RAID
System as a logical drive letter to the Windows file system.
Files can be written to and retrieved from the archive as they
would a network drive. XenData Software is tightly integrated
with the Microsoft Server operating system and provides impressive
data transfer rates and excellent compatibility with existing
applications.
Continuous Data Protection
Files are initially written to RAID, and immediately
queued to be written to the primary tape cartridge. This provides
Continuous Data Protection
without a backup window and overcomes the scalability limits
of conventional backup. Additionally, the system administrator
can determine policies for RAID caching. These policies can
be tailored for each volume and file type written to the library,
and include retention times on RAID, the use of WORM or rewritable
tape cartridges and the scheduling of tape replication.
Three-Tier HSM
The ability to duplicate tape cartridges for off-site retention,
combined with off-line cartridge management capabilities allows
XenData to
implement an on-line, near-line and off-line storage management
system designed to meet retention policies and compliance requirements.
Online Archives
The system can be configured without file
flushing to keep all current files on hard disk. This creates
a cost effective online archive with strong continuous data
protection when implemented with a high capacity RAID and small
tape library.
HSM – Nearline
After flushing files from RAID, the offline
attribute bit is set and files remain available from tapes
within the library. For read access, requested files are automatically
restored to RAID.
HSM – Offline
Once a file has been flushed from RAID
and all tapes containing that file have been exported, it is
considered offline. However, the file still appears within
the archive file system. By using the XenData Alert Module,
an on-screen and/or email notification will be sent whenever
an offline file is accessed. This alert identifies which file
was requested and also provides its tape barcode.
